Learn About Being a Navy Physician Assistant
Learn About Being a Navy Physician AssistantLearn About Being a Navy Physician AssistantPhysician Assistants (PA) are trained at the graduate level and able to expand the reach of the Navys healthcare team in assessing and treating patients. That level of skill and education earns military PAs a place in the commissioned ranks right alongside doctors, nurses, and other graduate-level professionals. In the Navy, PAs are expected to provide the same worldwide service as any other military professional, though in addition to postings at land-based hospitals they may serve aboard aircraft carriers and other ships, caring for sailors and Marines. Direct Commission of Civilian PAs Whenever the Navy has openings, civilian physician assistants can skip Go and collect an officers commission. None of the Navys requirements for the job are more important than valid licensure, but PAs must also be medically- and physically-fit U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 41. Obviously, licensed civilians entering the Navy already have most of the education they need to do the job, but that doesnt make them naval officers. The Direct Commission Officer Indoctrination Course at Newport, Rhode Island, despite being comprehensive and intense, is only two weeks long. Somehow in those two weeks, new Navy PAs learn enough about military leadership, customs, and naval history to earn their first salute. They will, however, sweat through exerzieren and physical training under experienced Marine Corps Drill Instructors. Civilian Scholarships In addition to HPLRP, the Navy offers two programs to help future PAs finish their schooling The Health Professions Scholarship Program and the Health Services Collegiate Program. While their names and benefits are nearly identical, there are two basic differences If youre going to rack up a tuition higher than $134,600 - the cap for the Collegiate Program - then the Scholarship Program holds the advantage with 100% tuition reimbursement.T hough both programs offer a monthly stipend (similar to thePost-9/11 GI Bills monthly housing allowance) the Collegiate Programs $3,280 to $5,610 per month towers over the Scholarship Programs $2,122. Sailors and Marines Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) The Navy sets its own requirements for IPAP in chapter 6 of OPNAVINST 1420.1B(MS Word). Sailors and Marines must be at least an E-5 (petty officer 2nd class or sergeant, respectively) and younger than 42 years. The program is only for active duty servicemembers, but reservists may apply if theyre in the Full Time Service or Active Reserve programs. In some ways (if you already intended on a military career) IPAP is a nifty shortcut around some of the long schooling required to become a PA. No bachelors degree? No problem Entry only requires a high school diploma and 60 undergraduate credits. Thats a feasible goal for off-duty education, though 30 credits in core subjects like chemistry and anatomy must be taken in residence. Sailors of any rating (or Marines with any military occupational specialty) can apply for IPAP, but the regulation adds that hospital corpsmen who finished advanced schooling to become independent duty corpsmen gain an edge by wiping out the additional 30 semester hours and the 6 AP anatomy and physiology semester hours. Navy students in IPAP train alongside future PAs from the other service branches at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where they spend the first phase of the program earning a bachelors degree. The remainder of the program takes them through clinical experience and a masters thesis at naval hospitals aboard either Camp Pendleton or Naval Base San Diego.

How to wake up, engage, and create the job of your dreams
How to wake up, engage, and create the job of yur dreamsHow to wake up, engage, and create the job of yur dreamsAre you getting the kind of results you want at work? If youre like many professionals, the answer is no. Perhaps youre stalled mid-way up the career ladder and youre bedrngnis sure why. Or maybe youre just feeling vaguely unfulfilled. You may assume the problem is your boss, or your companys culture, or even the industry youre in. But before you change jobs - or worse, resign yourself to a mediocre work life - ask yourself Am I really giving 100%?Many people get stuckverzierung in a cycle of sleepwalking through the workday and we dont even realize it. We tend to look for some outside cause for our feelings of restlessness when the truth is we arent fully engaged. What we really need to do is ask ourselves What do I want my job to be like? And how can I create it?Most of us work the same way we live. And sadly, very few of us really consider what kind of life we truly wa nt, let alone take steps to make it a reality. Were living a life that was chosen for us, or one that we made by default, or one that we accepted out of fear that we couldnt do any better. As a result, were unfulfilled, burned out, and unhappy. It doesnt have to be this way. We all have the potential to lead an extraordinary life. That includes an extraordinary work life. The vast majority of us could, if we so chose, perform at a much higher level. We could reinvent our job to be more fulfilling. So why dont we? Its because most people see the world through filters and rigid belief systems weve developed over time. Were filled with fear, confusion, judgment, and a sense of separateness that makes life, and work, feel purposeless. This blocks our ability to innovate, problem solve, and connect with other people in an authentic way.The key is to become more conscious. When we do, we can transform every area of life. My book, Uncovering the Life of Your Dreams, conveys this message in t he form of allegorical fiction. It follows protagonist Scott Billings as he moves from sleepwalking through life to awakening to a new reality that yields unprecedented career success, stronger and richer relationships, and a newfound desire to serve others. The reader follows Scott through the uncovery process Removing all that is mind-fabricated until only purity remains. During his journey he passes through five portals - Awareness, Acceptance, Knowing, Presence, and Freedom. Based on the insights gained through these portals, here are four steps to wake up to the work life of your dreams.1. Get self-aware. What thoughts and beliefs are shaping the way you perceive your job?We all have experiences and expectations that shape our perception of the world. We make up stories and interpret our environment based on how things seem to us in the moment, not stopping to consider how these perceptions match up to reality. We are too close and personally invested in the situations and circ umstances of our lives to perceive them accurately. We need to strip away ego-generated thoughts and beliefs that keep us from seeing things as they are. Only then can we make intentional adjustments.Ask yourself Am I overthinking why things happen in the workplace? Am I assigning motives to people that they dont really have? Am I making assumptions based on things that may have happened at a previous job? In short, understand that you bring your own perceptions to the workplace, and they might influence how you feel and even how you act in certain situations. To improve self-awareness, imagine watching your life as though it were a movie. Try to detach yourself from the outcomes and just take in the show. Focus on the things that happen without trying to contextualize or interpret them. One degree of emotional separation will open your eyes to the problems we create for ourselves just out of a lack of awareness. Dont let these sap your energy. Be very intentional about taking a step back and realizing whats real and whats a product of your mind.2. Stop judging. Start accepting. Many of us spend far too much precious time and energy judging the world around us. We get personally attached to what we view as the right outcome or the right way to handle a situation, so we fight what is. We are also quick to make character judgments about other people when they do things we dont agree with. This non-acceptance causes most of our emotional suffering. We get stuck in a judgmental mode of thinking and as a result, come to view the world - and the workplace - as painful, unjust, and disappointing.Have you ever felt really sure that things should happen a certain way, only to later find out you didnt know the variables? Most of us have experienced this. We get all bent out of shape and take things personally. We are really invested in being right when in the end it doesnt really matter.Even when a coworker does something youre sure is a mistake, its better not to judge. In reality, we are all trying to feel safe we are all seeking love. True acceptance is understanding this and knowing that most of the time, the mistakes we judge other people for making are born out of ignorance. We need to get to a place where we can accept all possible outcomes and make peace with how things happen. When we embrace acceptance as a part of who we are, we release any emotional connection to a particular outcome. The idea is to accept and embrace all experiences that life provides, not judging them as bad - or good. Mastering acceptance allows you to experience life open-armed and with a sense of joy. One way to start to cultivate acceptance is to keep a judgment journal so that you can become aware of all the judgments you make on a daily basis.3. Stop shutting down your intuition.Intuition is a powerful force that can point us in the right direction. Its knowing something without knowing how you know it. Intuition comes in many forms. Some people have bodily sens ations that inform them - literally, a feeling in their gut. Some people hear a voice inside some people see images. We need to first recognize our intuitive experiences and language then we need to listen to our intuition and let it shape our actions. In the workplace, where decisions tend to be more evidence-based, we tend not to speak up about our intuitive feelings. This is especially true when our intuition is telling us to change course, or when it points to a problem in something we believe in. Were afraid of appearing ignorant or vulnerable, and most of us fear the unknown, so we push forward despite our instincts telling us to readjust. But, when we have a strong gut feeling we should at least mention it.Get fear out of the equation and tap into your inner wisdom. We need to practice listening to our intuition from a place of acceptance and awareness. Keep an open mind. Dont look to your intuition for confirmation of what you believe or want to be true, but instead be open to hearing whatever your intuition has to say. Remember Intuition can help you only if you dont have any emotional attachment to a particular outcome or result.4. Master the art of presence. Many of us tend to stay so focused on the past and future that we dont really engage in the present moment. Yet the only time we have the power to really effect change in our lives is in the present. Worrying about the past, future, or anything other than the present moment splits your focus and saps your productivity. In your work relationships, being present helps you actively listen to and engage with the people around you. Being present for whatever you do enables you to perform to the best of your abilities.Do you ever find yourself going to a meeting and kind of zoning out? Youre present physically but youre not fully engaged and participating. Were all guilty of this kind of thing from time to time. Its not always easy to be fully in the moment, but thats how you bring value to your job. O ne solution is to begin a meditation or centering practice. Even a few minutes in the morning will increase your ability to focus and be present for the rest of the day. There are many meditation apps and free videos to get you started. The secret to a fulfilling life is to accumulate a lifetime of fulfilling moments. It takes effort and intentional thinking to be present for these moments and to not let them pass you by. And yes, that includes being fully engaged in the time you spend at work. Not only does this make you a top performer, its the source of the joy and fulfillment you want to derive from your work life. When you master these four steps, you are finally free to really wake up and start living the life of your dreams. That includes reinventing how you approach your work. These skills free you to stop going through the motions and get fully engaged in your work. When you do, you may be surprised by how differently you perceive your job. And youll finally be able to shape a nd nurture a professional life you can be proud of - one that brings you true joy and fulfillment.

How to psych yourself up for a challenging assignment
How to psych yourself up for a challenging assignmentHow to psych yourself up for a challenging assignmentWith sky-high expectations, a tight deadline and a whole lot of moving parts, youve got yourself a pretty daunting assignment. Heres how to finally get started once you stop groaning about it.Look fear dead in the eyePeter Bregman, an author, consultant, and CEO of Bregman Partners, writes in the Harvard Business Review that you should acknowledge the fear you feel when you want to begin a major project, after mentioning how he wants to write a screenplay.Heres why acknowledging your fear works Youre scared because you expect a lot from yourself and youre afraid youll underperform. When you acknowledge that fear, youre acknowledging that you might not have all that it takes to meet your expectations you might not have all the tools, information, skills, etc. Admitting that, in turn, reduces your expectation of getting it perfect right off the bat.And lowering your expectation of getting it right is the key to getting it started.Figure out whats standing in your wayMelody Wilding, an executive coach and social worker who teaches at CUNY Hunter College, writes on herbei site that you should identify exactly whats stopping you when youre losing the procrastination game. When you try to get started on your project, what stops you? For one week, document the reasons why you avoid getting started. By playing the observer, youll tackle excuses blocking you and reveal opportunities to change in productive ways. Perhaps theres a skill you need to learn in order to move forward. Or if youre struggling with feeling tired when you sit down to work, you could try eating a snack or showering beforehand to wake up.Remember, you dont have to go it aloneDawn Rosenberg McKay, an author and career planning professional, writes in The Balance that you should find a procrastinating buddy when procrastination is getting in your way.Partner with a coworker who also has a problem with putting things off. Show each other your to-do lists and then hold each other accountable for completing items on your respective ones. The stakes are certainly lower when you have to answer to a coworker instead of your boss, but it may give you the push you need.Break the project into manageable piecesStarting your project is half the battle.Kevin Daum, an Inc. 500 entrepreneur, author of Roar Get Heard in the Sales and Marketing Jungle and Video Marketing for Dummies writes in Inc. that you should platzset micro goals.Take the project and divide it into smaller parts. New IR laws for Australian workers
New IR laws for Australian workers New IR laws for Australian workersPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister The Howard Governments controversial WorkChoices has been declared dead and buried by Labor who have replaced it with their Fair Work Bill. WorkChoices was criticised for putting the balance of power too much in favour of employers, while the main criticism now leveled at Fair Work is that clamping down on industrial laws during wildbewegt economic times might cost jobs. The crackdown on unfair dismissal laws is the most contentious part of the legislation, with critics saying it will discourage some companies from hiring through fear they wont be able to cut workers when times are tough. The laws were bounced back and forwards between the Senate and the House of Representatives, until Family First Senator, Steven Fielding, did a deal with the government on what size a company must be to be exempt from unfair dismissal laws. While the Coalition conceded the government had a mandate to make the changes, Opposition leader, Malcolm Turnbull, says the laws will be judged by their impact on employment levels. The three criteria on which this law will be judged are jobs, jobs, jobs. Every month therell be a report card the jobs figures. And its from that report card that we and all Australians will know the real impact of this law on jobs, he said. Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, defended the introduction of the Governments new workplace laws in these times of economic uncertainty. Gillard has said, We designed our Fair Work Bill to be the right policy for the good economic times and the bad economic times to balance flexibility and fairness. The Fair Work Bill was leid designed for one set of economic circumstances, she said. Greens leader, Bob Brown, had suggested amendments such as paid maternity leave and limits on executive pay but did not insist on them when the Bill was passed. Some industries have already moved to say that the IR changes will have a negative impact, with a new survey by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry saying nearly half of all employers fear the new laws will lead to job losses and higher business costs. So what exactly do the new industrial relations laws mean for workers and employers? Unfair dismissals Under WorkChoices, only people who worked in big firms of more than 100 employees were allowed to claim unfair dismissal. Under the new laws only small businesses of less than 15 staff will be exempt. There will now be an 18-month phasing in period during which only full-time staff will be counted after which casual and part-time employees will be included in the head count. Bargaining Another of the more contentious parts of the new laws is how workers negotiate their contracts. Under Fair Work, good-faith bargaining will give workers the right to collective negotiations with an employer if a majority of workers want it.

3D Printing A New Ally for the Liver
3D Printing A New Ally for the Liver 3D Printing A New Ally for the Liver 3D Printing A New Ally for the LiverIn 2012, Dr. Nizar Zein found himself at a Starbucks reading an article on 3D printing for non-medical use. Among other things, he considered the problem with surgery involving livers, whether transplant or tumor resection. One issue for this complicated organ, he says, is that patients sometimes end up with complications due to inadvertently cutting through a major blood vessel or bile duct.He realized 3D printing might bea helpfulassistant. Working as parte of a team at the Cleveland Clinic,he and his group havebeen on an odyssey to gebru this technology with the medical need.A Closer Look, and FeelAs Zein explains, there are difficulties in coming up with a surgical plan when it comes to the liver. For example, when you turn 2D images into 3D images, you were still looking at these 3D images through a 2D computer screen. You lose the sense of depth, he says. The thinking w ith 3D printing a liver wasthatit would solve this issue. And it could have the added advantage of tactile functioning. With a replica of the patients liver, the thought was also that you could reassess your landmark and proximity to major blood vessels and bile ducts, says Zein, the Cleveland Clinics chief of hepatology and chairman of global patient services.A human liver during transplantation procedure. Image Wikimedia CommonsThey produced the very first patient-phased liver in 2012 and, to his knowledge, it was the first 3D-printed liver ever done.Phase II then came, itsprimary goal to verify that an identical copy could be created for a patients liver. We went through a process for every patient who underwent liver surgery where we resected a portion of the liver, took it out, and prior to surgery, weprepared a 3D printed version of it, explains Zein. They found the results showed it was quite accurate, he says.Improvements vary from the first model being at 75% of an actual li ver model to those today createdat actual scale, to moving to plastic as a material. Among the most impressive improvements is in speed, however. The first model took roughly six weeks to produce. Now? It takes less than 48 hours. But there has also been a change in the transparency of the model. Zein described early ones as a little bit hazy, yellowish in color, while more recent models are almost like looking through glass.Theyve also extended the technology, for surgical purposes, to components. This includes the hilum, which, Zein says, is the most complicated in terms of blood vessels and bile ducts structures. Its printed separately from the liver so it allows for better planning, he says. They have utilized magnets to print the liver and different components separately but, with magnets, they can put them back together depending on what particular component you want to see more carefully. They even developed methods toallow models in sterile packaging to be taken into the operat ing room. The teams data has shown times when surgical plans have been at least somewhat altered when a model was utilized. The hospital has even used a model for guidance for a surgery involving a tumor in the liverafter the patient had been turned down by multiple institutions for surgery, he says.My career has been as a clinical investigator so medical research and investigation is part of my life and its probably the most exciting part of my life.Dr. Nizar Zein, The Cleveland ClinicMy career has been as a clinical investigator so medical research and investigation is part of my life and its probably the most exciting part of my life, says Zein, whose father was an engineer. So Im very proud of what we did. What comes out of it, in the end, Im not sure, but I have a feeling that there will be a role for these technologies, 3D printing, in complex surgeries.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Bioengineering is the theme of ASMEs IMECE 2015. 5 Things Comedy Class Teaches You About Job Search
5 Things Comedy Class Teaches You About Job Search5 Things Comedy Class Teaches You About Job SearchFor six weeks this fall, Ive been studying writing of a different kind Karen Bergreens beginner comedy class at the Manhattan Comedy School. I always tell my job-seeking clients and column readers to be well-rounded and unique and to keep learning and stretching. So learning about things seemingly unrelated to my own day job is part of taking my own advice. Luckily, comedy is relevant to job search techniqueBe specific. The funniest comedians give very specific details. The same can be said about compelling job candidates the best candidates are specific in explaining what they want and what they contribute. When good job candidates give an example, we understand the scope of their responsibilities and the scale of their accomplishments.Edit ruthlessly. You dont need a lot of explanation before getting to the punch line of the story. In fact, too much explanation diminishes the power of the joke. Similarly, dont ramble in your bewerbungsgesprch responses and other job search communication. Get to the point quickly and keep your listeners attention.Talk about what you know. Being comfortable and familiar with your subject matter made it infinitely easier to be specific and find the humor. Successful jobseekers need to get comfortable and familiar with the industries, companies, and jobs they are targeting. Do research before meeting people. Prepare your interview examples. When you talk about what you know (because you have researched and prepared in advance), you captivate your listener.Be yourself. There is no one profile or style that is the funny one. It is better to infuse who you are genuinely into your comedy set. In the case of job candidates, your unique personality differentiates you in addition to your professional attributes. There are other good communicators, exceptional problem-solvers, and strong leaders. You compete on skills and experience but also contribute your unique style. The audience needs to get the joke. Sometimes a student was really attached to a joke that others in the class didnt understand or didnt think was funny. Instead of arguing the point, students were encouraged to rewrite and rework the original premise. Similarly, jobseekers should pay attention to any feedback that suggests what youre doing isnt working. You may think your job search technique is fine, but if its been several months and you havent landed anything, employers clearly arent getting you. Dont argue with the market rework your job search.Sometimes when you are overly-focused on a goal, you can get stuck. Its very helpful to step back and focus on something very differentto refresh, reignite your creativity, and broaden your perspective. You may find that you come back to your original goal with fresh eyes and are more productive. You dont have to take comedy class specifically or even do something artistic. It can be sports, cooking, joining a book club. Diverse interests are valuable to the jobseeker because they make you more unique, they stretch and challenge you in different ways, and they enable you to remain fresh and productive.
